Moving to Central Florida can open a new chapter in education as well as homeownership. You may have a teenager preparing for college, be planning your own return to school, or be exploring professional training after a career change.
The colleges and universities in Central Florida offer different experiences, from a large public research university to liberal arts education, state college pathways, and specialized healthcare or creative programs.
This guide introduces eight options around Orlando and the wider region. It is a selected overview, not a ranking. Use it to plan campus visits, compare programs, and understand how a student’s actual class location could affect your home search.
1. University of Central Florida (UCF)
Location: Main campus east of downtown Orlando, with additional teaching locations
UCF’s footprint extends beyond its main campus. Its locations include UCF Downtown, the Rosen College of Hospitality Management near the International Drive area, and the health sciences campus at Lake Nona.
That matters when you are researching homes. Two students attending UCF may have very different destinations depending on their programs. Before comparing housing or commuting options, ask where required classes, labs, and practical experiences will take place.
A home search around the main campus should not use the same assumptions as one built around downtown Orlando or Lake Nona.

2. Rollins College
Location: Winter Park
Rollins College is located on Lake Virginia in Winter Park. Its educational options include full-time undergraduate study, bachelor’s completion opportunities, and selected graduate programs.
Families exploring Winter Park can combine a campus visit with a closer look at their potential daily routine. Students returning to education should also compare the format of the program they want, including evening options where available.
Ask which division handles your application and how the schedule fits with work, commuting, and other commitments.
3. Valencia College
Location: Multiple campuses in Orange and Osceola counties
Valencia College offers associate degrees, selected bachelor’s degrees, certificates, and other training options. Its Associate in Arts pathway prepares students for university transfer, while career-focused programs support different professional goals.
Valencia has several campuses, including West, East, Downtown, Lake Nona, Osceola, Poinciana, and Winter Park. Check the campus and format for your particular program before deciding which location to use in a home search.
Families based around Winter Garden, Windermere, or Oakland can research West Campus alongside other suitable locations, then test the actual route. Not every program or required course is offered at every campus.

4. Seminole State College of Florida
Location: Multiple campuses in Seminole County
Seminole State offers associate degrees, selected bachelor’s degrees, and certificate pathways. Students can compare university-transfer study with career-focused education.
Its campus network includes Sanford/Lake Mary, Altamonte Springs, Heathrow, and Oviedo. The college also offers online learning options.
For a family researching northern Orlando-area communities, the useful next step is to identify which campus delivers the chosen program. Ask about the location and timing of any labs, work placements, or other in-person requirements as well as ordinary classes.

5. Lake-Sumter State College
Location: Lake and Sumter counties, including Clermont
Lake-Sumter State College offers associate and bachelor’s degrees, certificates, and workforce training. Its South Lake Campus is in Clermont, making it an important location to research when comparing educational options in western Central Florida.
Families considering Clermont, Minneola, Montverde, Oakland, or Winter Garden can include South Lake in their campus research. Confirm which parts of a program are taught there and whether other locations or online study are involved.

6. Full Sail University
Location: Winter Park area; campus and online programs
Full Sail focuses on entertainment media and emerging technologies. Its offerings include associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs, with study areas spanning creative and technical interests.
Students interested in areas such as games, film, music, design, or technology can compare the specific curriculum with their career plans. Ask about the pace of study, equipment, class schedules, total program cost, and how credits may transfer.
For housing research, use Full Sail’s actual campus address rather than assuming its location is the same as Rollins or central Winter Park.
7. AdventHealth University
Location: Orlando, with program formats and locations varying
AdventHealth University focuses on healthcare education. Its program listings include nursing, imaging sciences, biomedical sciences, and other health-related fields, with undergraduate and graduate options.
Prospective students should check both university admission and the entry requirements for the particular professional program. Ask about prerequisites, clinical placements, attendance requirements, and any applicable program accreditation or licensure preparation.
A clinical placement may involve travel beyond the classroom campus, so include those possible locations when planning a commute.

8. Stetson University
Location: DeLand undergraduate campus, in the wider Central Florida region
Stetson adds a DeLand option to the guide, with undergraduate majors and minors as well as graduate study. It is worth a separate campus visit for families considering a broader regional search.
Keep the geography clear: Stetson’s College of Law is based in Gulfport in the Tampa Bay area, rather than at the DeLand undergraduate campus.
Compare the actual program location and whether the student plans to live on campus or commute. DeLand should be evaluated as its own destination, rather than treated as another Orlando neighborhood.

Understanding college-to-university pathways
A state college can be the first stage of a university education. One local pathway to investigate is DirectConnect to UCF.
UCF describes guaranteed admission, consistent with university policy, for students who earn an eligible Associate in Arts or statewide articulated Associate in Science degree from a partner college. Review the current eligibility terms directly with an advisor, and separately confirm requirements for the intended major.
Ask which courses to take, how previous credits will be evaluated, and what application steps remain. Planning the pathway early can also help you anticipate a later change in campus location.
What to ask before choosing a college
- Does the institution offer the exact program and credential I need?
- Which campus hosts required classes, labs, and practical experiences?
- What are the application deadlines and program-specific entry requirements?
- What is the full cost, including fees, equipment, housing, and transportation?
- How will previous credits transfer, and what financial aid may be available?
- What support, advising, and accessibility services can I discuss with the college?
- If residency affects tuition, what documentation and criteria does the institution require?
For costs and residency questions, obtain guidance directly from the institution’s admissions, financial aid, or residency office before building your budget.
Plan the campus search and home search together
Start with the actual teaching location, then compare housing choices around the student’s schedule and the rest of your household’s routine. Test the route during likely class hours and factor in parking, tolls, and evening travel.
Buying a nearby home does not secure college admission or student housing. Keep those decisions coordinated while confirming each separately with the institution.
